Modiin shops in three kinds of places: the big Azrieli mall in the city centre, the Yishpro power centre on the western edge, and about a dozen neighbourhood commercial centres.
The main places
- Azrieli Modiin opened in 2008 at 2 Lev HaIr St, next to Modiin Center station, with two floors and hundreds of shops (Azrieli (opens in a new tab)). Hours: Sun-Thu 09:30-22:00, Fri 09:00-15:00, and it reopens half an hour after Shabbat until 23:00 (ModiinApp (opens in a new tab)).
- Yishpro Center opened in 2005 in the Einav light-industry area, with many shops, a cinema and the big supermarket chains (Hebrew Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)).
- Neighbourhood centres: about 12, including Modiin Center in HaPrachim and the Country Center in Masuah, the first to open (same source).
- City Center (Ma'ar): businesses there are permitted to open 24/7 (ModiinApp (opens in a new tab)).
- The Tel Aviv Farmers' Market comes to the Lev Re'ut centre every Friday morning (ModiinApp (opens in a new tab)).
Reading the hechsher
The Modiin-Maccabim-Re'ut Rabbanut supervises kashrut and lists its kashrut supervisors on the city's religion page (municipality (opens in a new tab)). Local certificates come in two levels, Regular (רגיל) and Mehadrin. You can check any business on the Ministry of Religious Services portal by choosing the authority "מחלקת דת מודיעין-מכבים-רעות" (kashrut portal (opens in a new tab)). Some businesses use other agencies; ModiinApp notes, for example, that Super Tov in the Moriah Center has Tzohar supervision for its deli, butcher and produce departments only (ModiinApp (opens in a new tab)).
In my restaurant and grocery listings the kosher line is copied exactly as the certificate or the business states it.
Open on Shabbat?
Modiin is a mixed city, so some places do open on Shabbat. ModiinApp lists Saturday hours of 09:00-21:00 for Tiv Taam at Mega Or, Yishpro (ModiinApp (opens in a new tab)). If that matters to you, check the certificate on the wall rather than assuming.
